CBMT is a collaborative research initiative by the German Banking Industry Committee (GBIC). Unlike stablecoins or CBDCs, CBMT tokens are tokenized claims on regulated commercial banks — testing how they can move across blockchains, across institutions, and within existing regulatory frameworks.
This sandbox is for testing, learning, and exploring tokenized deposit use cases only. It is not a live financial service, does not involve real funds, and carries no regulatory or contractual obligation.
Commercial bank money — everyday deposits held at regulated banks — already accounts for roughly 85% of the money supply in Europe. CBMT asks a fundamental question: can it move on a distributed ledger, across banks, in real time?
Unlike stablecoins or CBDCs, CBMT tokens remain claims on a regulated bank, covered by existing deposit law and accounting standards. The goal is to bring programmability and DLT interoperability to money that already exists — not to create a new form of it.
Four principles that define tokenized commercial bank money.
Existing deposit regulation applies. No new risk framework required.
Atomic settlement, 24/7 transfers, no correspondent bank delays.
Smart contracts enable conditional payments and DvP settlement.
Redeemable back to traditional deposits at any time — no lock-in.
Banks, corporates, and technology partners currently participating in sandbox research.
Five scenarios being explored in the CBMT sandbox to generate evidence for regulatory and industry reference.
Testing pay-per-use IoT-triggered payments between enterprises — automated token flows from data capture to settlement, without manual invoicing.
Testing atomic peer-to-peer transfers between wallets at different banks — can tokenized deposits settle across institutions without a correspondent bank?
Exploring how corporates embed tokenized deposit wallets into ERP systems via API, enabling programmable treasury management and automated reconciliation.
Testing Delivery versus Payment between a tokenized asset on a public chain and CBMT tokens on a permissioned chain — atomic settlement, no intermediary.
Testing AI Agent-initiated cross-bank payments between enterprises on different blockchains — with certified agent identity and human-in-the-loop authorization.
Whether you're a bank or a corporate, we welcome institutions curious about the future of tokenized deposits.
Test tokenized deposit workflows in your treasury or ERP context. No real funds. No commitment. Just learning what's possible before it becomes production.
Tell us about your institution and your interest in the CBMT sandbox. We'll follow up with next steps — no obligation.
The Commercial Bank Money Token (CBMT) initiative is a research and exploration project in sandbox phase. It is not a licensed financial service, investment product, or production payment system. All sandbox activities — including token issuance, transfers, and settlements — are conducted in test environments using test currencies and do not involve real funds or legally binding transactions.
Participation in the CBMT sandbox does not constitute regulatory approval, endorsement, or compliance certification of any technology or business model. Findings from the sandbox are intended to inform future policy discussions and technical standards for regulatory reference purposes only.
